OK, so upgrading through YUM works until you get to Fedora @version ~16. At this point you are strongly advised not to use YUM anymore and to now use FedUP. However, the FedUP script tries to modify the grub boot file to enable the upgrade to take place on boot, but failed on my installation due to not having grub2. Upgrading to grub2 first and the upgrade script worked. The offering of a VNC connection for the remote anaconda install was nice but the machine failed respond to VNC during the ~45min installation (during which time my box was offline).

Anyways, make sure to package leaves and orphans at each point during migrations, removing any you find and its totally cool. Fedora 9 – > 18, upgrades DONE.
